Amsterdam
Concept design & renovation
Young couple

Design Intent
This project aimed to completely rebuild a city apartment in a 1889 historic building in the heart of Amsterdam’s Plantagebuurt. Using a back-to-brick renovation, we stripped the apartment down to its core structure—allowing for a fully updated layout, improved flow, and a design that balances heritage with contemporary living.
What We've Done
- Full back-to-brick renovation
- New floor plan with improved spatial logic
- Restoration of historical wall mouldings
- Technical drawings for custom built-ins
- Material and colour concept development
- Furniture, lighting, and FF&E selection
- Final styling with refined finishes

Our Approach
- Initial assessment: We stripped the apartment back to its structural shell to uncover its full potential.
- Space reconfiguration: Designed a new floor plan to improve functionality, light, and flow.
- Built-in design: Created custom cabinetry and wardrobes with detailed technical drawings.
- Concept development: Developed the mood, material palette, and 2D layouts to shape the full atmosphere.
- Selection & sourcing: Carefully chose furnishings, lighting, and materials in line with the building’s character.
- Execution management: Oversaw renovation and installation phases to ensure design fidelity.
The Transformation
The renovation significantly increased the apartment’s market value. Original features were given new life, adding atmosphere and depth. The space now combines historical charm with modern sophistication.
Closing Note
This project in the Plantage neighbourhood in Amsterdam exemplifies how the essence of a home can be rediscovered when you go back to its foundations. By stripping the apartment down to its bare structure, we were able to carefully rebuild it—layer by layer—with attention to flow, proportion, and atmosphere. Every detail was thoughtfully reintroduced: from the rhythm of the restored wall mouldings to the precision of custom built-ins that respect the architecture’s original lines.
What once felt outdated and closed-in is now a calm, open and character-rich city retreat—where history is not lost but enhanced.
Back-to-brick renovations are at the heart of Studio Loure’s vision, as they allow us to preserve cultural heritage while bringing in contemporary soul. They’re where the old and new meet—and where timeless design begins.
